Utah Swimming Splits Against TCU

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team knocked off TCU at home on Saturday afternoon by a score of 141-95, while the men's team fell to the Horned Frogs 136-101. The women move to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in MWC competition, while the men fall to 0-4 (0-2 in MWC competition).
For the women, the team started strong with a win in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Shannon McQueen, Adrienne Coburn, Jennifer Fredsall and Annie VanLeeuwen swam a time of 1:48.14. McQueen added a victory in the 200 free (1:55.98) and 100 back (59.17), later in the meet. Coburn also won a second event, as her time of 2:08.93 was the best in the 200 IM, while Fredsall won her second event of the day in the 100 fly (57.49).
Freshman Natalie Edge continued to perform well winning the 50 free 24.14. She also added victories in the 100 free (52.43) and was on the winning 200 free relay team which finished in a time of 1:37.26.
On the diving end, Anna Braszkiewicz won the one-meter diving with a score of 241.71, and placed second in the three-meter, while Kwan Ling Yu won the three-meter diving, scoring 280.66. Yu's score on the three-meter was enough to qualify her for the zone regionals.
"I am impressed how our women are coming together as a team," comments head coach Greg Winslow. "We're paying attention to details and starting to do the little things right and that's a good sign. We were obviously still a little tired from the winter training, but now our focus over the next couple of weeks is to get ready for the conference championships."
The men hosted their final meet of the season and the final home event for the seniors. Marco Ferraro took first in the 1000 free with his time of 9:46.26, winning by over ten seconds. Freshman Thomas Ekstrom won the 200 free in a time of 1:43.74. Vlas Lezin won the 100 fly with a time of 51.78.
George Evans garnered a victory in the 100 free with a time of 46.67. Adam Oliver was able to help the Utes by winning the 500 free in a time of 4:43.78. Micheal Glasson placed third on both boards in diving for the Utes.
"Half way through the meet our men were in danger of getting blown out," states Winslow. "But we were able to turn in around in the second part of the meet and actually had a chance to win in the final two events. That attitude and turnaround for our team was very impressive and is a great step forward even though in the end we couldn't pull it out."
Next up for Utah is a women's only meet in Salt Lake City on Saturday, January 19, as they will host Colorado State. The men will return to action on January 25, against Wyoming.
