COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Utah volleyball team won its third-straight match of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Air Force on Friday, Sept. 28.
Kathryn Haynie led Utah with 11 kills with a service ace and five digs. Kate Robison tallied eight kills and nine digs while Stephanie Shardlow had 21 assists and 11 digs on the night. Lori Baird had seven kills and five blocks, hitting .385.
"Every win is a good win for us," head coach Beth Launiere said. "Our defense continues to play well. We held them to .008 in hitting, which is excellent."
After Utah won games one (30-17) and two (30-19) with relative ease, Air Force did not lead until the third game. With the Falcons holding a five-point lead, 15-10, Utah went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead, 18-15, led by three kills and a block from Haynie. The two teams stayed close for the next several points and the game remained tied late, 24-24. Utah reeled off three quick points off attack errors by Air Force to take the late lead, which they would retain the remainder of the contest to win, 30-27.
Others who played strong for the Utes included Keisha Fisher with 14 assists and four digs and Karolina Bartkowiak, who had eight kills. Connie Dangerfield tallied 11 digs. With 1,305 digs to her credit, she needs just nine digs to break the Utah career record, set in 1997 by Brenda Barton-Whicker (1,313).
For Air Force, Katie Batchelder had 11 kills on the night while Kim Kallabis had 17 assists and five digs. Carolina Kurtz tallied five kills and six digs. Rebecca Gerton had two service aces and eight digs.
