PROVO, UTAH - The University of Utah women's tennis team completed the first day of the BYU Invitational on Thursday. The Utes have dominated the competition in the tournament with three singles moving into the quarterfinals, three players moving into the semifinals, and three doubles teams moving into the quarterfinals.
In the Singles A bracket, three players will advance into the quarterfinals on Friday's competition. The No. 1 seed, Elizabeth Ferris received a bye in the round of 32, and then dominated Anette Pohjalainen 6-1, 6-2. Newcomer Evgenia Kryunchkova faced Weber State's Gabi Venditto for a 6-2, 6-0 win in the round of 32. The freshman then moved into the round of 16 to face a distinguished player from BYU. Kryunchkova smashed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dolly Chang in the round of 16.
Emily Kwok started out competition with a bye in the round of 32. The Ute faced conference opponent Hilary Tyler from Colorado State. Kwok took the match 6-4, 7-6(4) over the Ram in the round of 16.
In the Singles B bracket, Karine Bourdages, Andrea Maughan, and Dee Dee Nelson took control of singles play. Bourdages defeated Rui Xu 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16. The Ute took on Jocelyn Jensen from BYU in the round of 16 for a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Cougar. Sophomore Andrea Maughan faced Markey Mullen from Weber State in the round of 16 for a straight 6-0, 6-0 domination. Moving into the next round, Maughan faced Cheyenne Reveche. The two Utes battled through two sets for a 6-4, 6-2 win in Maughan's favor.
Newcomer Dee Dee Nelson stepped in to face Hailey Swenson from Utah State in the round of 16 for a three-set battle ending in a Ute win. Nelson fell in the first set, but came back to smash a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over the Aggie. In the quarterfinals, the Ute faced Caitlin Fluegge from Colorado State and took the match 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-4.
In doubles play, three teams will advance into the quarterfinals on Friday. Ferris and Leigh Walsh teamed up to defeated Breanna Harris and Bridgette Strickland 8-1 in the round of 16 after receiving a bye in the first round.
Monson and Bourdages also received a bye in the round of 32 before taking an 8-3 win over Lauren Strasburger and Hilary Tyler from Colorado State. Finishing out doubles play on Thursday, Reveche and Kwok defeated Greer Satherlie and Rui Xu from Colorado State 8-2 after also receiving a bye in the round of 32.
