SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team turned in one of the best team grade-point averages in the nation as its 3.300 GPA ranked No. 28 in the country. It was the top team GPA in the Mountain West Conference and second to all of the Division I track and field programs in the state.
"I'm proud of each athlete on the team," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "Each and every one of them is defining the word `Student' in the term student-athlete. This is a testament not only to how hard these women worked in and out of the classroom, but to Rob Rainey and the academic support staff who do so much to provide the tools these women need to succeed.
"Ultimately, their lives are going to revolve around something other than track and field or cross country. So, to see them succeed in this arena as well shows how well-rounded and motivated these women really are."
Utah's team GPA of 3.300 ranked 28th in the country and was second in the state to Utah State. The Aggies' 3.440 team GPA was fifth in the country. University of Arkansas - Little Rock led all teams with a 3.610 team GPA.
In all, there were 97 Division I Women's programs recognized as 2007 All-Academic Track and Field Teams. The Big Ten Conference led all conferences with a total of eight All-Academic teams.
To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 GPA.
