Two Set to Represent Utah at Track and Field Championships

SALT LAKE CITY - All of the hard work since January is about to pay off as two University of Utah track and field athletes will be competing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week. The meet will be held on the campus of Sacramento State from June 6-9.
The six-month track and field season (including both indoor and outdoor seasons) will come to a head for both Amanda Feigt and Chelsea Shapard as they will represent the Utes at the championship event. Feigt will compete in the 400m hurdles and the heptathlon while Shapard will be competing in the 400m hurdles.
"The NCAA meet is always a good experience and we're looking forward to a great week of competition here at Sacramento State," said head coach Kyle Kepler.
Feigt qualified for the heptathlon at the Mountain West Conference championships. The senior's 5,328-point effort won her the conference crown and also set a new school mark. She also qualified for the 400m hurdles, earning an automatic bid with a fifth-place finish (58.67) at the NCAA West Regionals in Eugene, Ore.
"This is Amanda's second time," said Kepler. "Her experience should come into play and help her with the first heat of the 400m hurdles. Amanda knows the atmosphere and knows what to expect and she can relax and focus on the events, not what's going on around her.
"She has been sick and hasn't been able to practice the last four days, but she looked good in the practices prior to that. The four days off could be a blessing in disguise for her."
This will be Feigt's second turn at the NCAA's, qualifying for the 400m hurdles in last year's meet.
Shapard, only a sophomore, is making her first appearance at the NCAA Championship. The Park City, Utah, native received an at-large bid to the meet. In her last outing, she finished seventh (1:00.17) in the final heat of the 400m hurdles at the West Regional. However, Shapard also set a school record at the Mountain West Conference championships. There, she clocked the 400m hurdles in 58.47, winning the league title.
"This is Chelsea's first go-around at the NCAA's and she is battling a lower-leg injury." Kepler said. "She should be okay and this will be an excellent experience for her. For her to qualify for the second round in the 400m hurdles will be a major accomplishment, considering she was the last athlete to receive an at-large bid to the event.
"Experience at this type of meet is a big factor. Talent means a lot, too, but being able to focus on your race is a big part of it. This is a chance for Chelsea to familiarize herself with a meet of this caliber, and for her to run against some of the best hurdlers in the country."
Both Feigt and Shapard earned all-conference nods and are in contention for the All-America accolades. The top eight American finishers earn All-America honors. Complete scoring and results can be found at hornetsports.com and at ncaasports.com.
