SALT LAKE CITY - Zach Ganger of the University of Utah men's tennis team is set to face No. 29 Harel Srugo from Old Dominion in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships on Wednesday in Athens, Georgia. The first serve is tentatively scheduled to be at 2:30 p.m. EST.
Ganger, a junior and native to Jacksonville, Fla., has posted a 27-11 overall record this season as he embarks on his third appearance at the NCAA's. Ganger, who is currently ranked No. 49 in the nation, will face No. 29 Harel Srugo, a sophomore. Srugo, a native to Kitbutz Gazit, Israel, has compiled a 32-12 overall singles record this year before competing in the doubles bracket.
"I am very excited to represent the University of Utah this year as a singles participant in the NCAA's," says Ganger. "Although it would have been fun to compete in doubles as well, I feel that this is a great opportunity for me to compete against the best singles players in the country, and I think it will be a good experience."
As a freshman, Ganger and Miron Mann, then ranked No. 34 by the ITA, competed at the 2005 NCAA Division I Tournament in doubles play. The duo fell in the first round to then No. 38 Marko Rajevac and David North from Georgia Tech 6-3, 6-4. Last year, Ganger and Nick Coutts competed in the doubles competition in the 2006 NCAA Tournament with a No. 35 national ranking. They faced No. 14 Ken Skupski and Mark Growcott from Louisiana State for a 7-6(3), 6-3 loss for the Utes.
