SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah is proud to announce that Zach Ganger and Elizabeth Ferris each earned the Mountain West Conference Player's of the Week honor for this week.
No. 57 Ganger, a native to Jacksonville, Fla., was named the MWC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after going undefeated last weekend, 4-0 in singles play. The Ute's highlight came after defeating No. 30 Markus Dickhardt from San Diego State. Ganger took the victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win, which ended Dickhardt's 15-match winning streak.
In doubles play, Ganger teamed up with Miron Mann at the top spot to face No. 14 Dickhardt and Christian Groh from the Aztecs. The Ute duo slammed an 8-4 victory over the Aztecs for the upset. "Zach is having a tremendous season for us this year and thoroughly deserves this accolade," said Graeme Cox, assistant coach for the University of Utah men's tennis team.
Ferris, a native to Anaheim, Calif., shares the MWC Women's Tennis Player of the Week with BYU's Anastasia Surkova. The Ute has remained undefeated this season thus far, posting an 18-0 winning streak. Ferris is fresh off of two big wins over nationally ranked opponents from last week's competition.
The unranked junior posted back-to-back upsets at the top spot over the weekend. Ferris defeated No. 58 Anna Sydorska (TCU) 6-1, 6-3, followed by a 6-4, 6-7(6), 10-8 win over No. 119 Ola Abou-Zekry.
In doubles play, Ferris teamed up with Leigh Walsh at the No. 1 slot. The Ute duo fell to Sydorska and Nina Munich-Soegaard (TCU) 9-8(1), but defeated Sandra Zmak and Lucy Scott from New Mexico 8-6.
"Liz is doing such a great job for us right now," stated Megan Dorny, head coach for the University of Utah women's tennis team. "I am thrilled with the success that both Liz and Zach are having and for what great recognition they are giving to themselves and the University of Utah."
