BOISE, Idaho - The University of Utah men's tennis team fell on the road Sunday to the University of Pennsylvania 6-1. The Utes are now 7-4 for the season.
Before the Quakers took the doubles point, the Utes had a big win at the No. 1 slot. Zach Ganger and Miron Mann stepped up against Jason Pinsky and Eric Riley from Penn. The Ute duo pulled ahead to take the match 8-6.
The Utes struggled on Sunday against the Quakers in singles play as well. No. 50 Ganger fell to Jason Pinsky at the No. 1 slot in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Mann represented the Utes at the No. 2 slot against Jonathon Boym from Penn. The two played through two sets, ending in a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the Quaker's favor.
Next on the courts to finish was sophomore Wes Hancock at the No. 3 slot facing Justin Fox from the Quakers. Fox took the first set with ease 6-2. The Ute stepped up his game in the second, but in the end, it wasn't enough. Fox took the set and match 6-2, 7-5.
Battling at the No. 4 slot, was Jason Smits from the Utes and Joe Lok from the Quakers. Smits took the first set 6-4 before Lok got into his game. The Quaker stepped in to take the second set 6-2. The tie-breaker went point for point as the two battled for the win. As the set came to an end, Lok stepped forward as the victor with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win.
Freshman Othman Zerouali-Ouariti stepped in at the No. 5 slot for the Utes to face Simon Bekker from the Quakers. The Ute edged out a 7-6(2) win in the first set and continued to challenge Bekker in the second set. Zerouali-Ouariti finished the Quaker off for a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory to give the Utes their only point for the overall match.
Timmy Allin finished up the competition on Sunday, playing at the No. 6 slot against Adam Schwartz. The Ute battled hard against the Quaker to take the first set 6-4. Schwartz stepped up his game to take the second set 6-3 over Allin. The Ute played hard into the tie-breaker against his opponent, but Schwartz took the lead in the end. The Quaker won the match 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
