PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah women's tennis team battled hard on Friday against the BYU Cougars for a close 3-4 loss to the No. 31 nationally ranked team.

The Utes upset the Cougars in doubles play on Friday, earning the doubles point. At the No. 1 slot, Emily Kwok and Cheyenne Reveche stepped in to face Anastasia Surkova and Jenny Miccoli. The Cougar duo overcame the Ute duo 8-3. Leigh Walsh and Elizabeth Ferris represented the Utes at the No. 2 slot against Lauren Jones and Sofia Holden from BYU. The Utes smashed an 8-6 match win over the Cougars. Finishing up in doubles play, Andrea Maughan and Karine Bourdages stepped in at the No. 3 slot against Kristina Doerr and Jocelyn Jensen. The duos went point for point, with the match being determined by a tie breaker. The Utes pulled ahead to take the match 9-8(2) to give Utah the doubles point and upset the Cougars.

The Utes held a 1-0 advantage going into singles play. Reveche was the first to finish up for Utah. Facing Chie Hayasaka at the No. 4 slot, the Ute was defeated 6-4, 6-1. At the No. 2 slot, Lauren Jones from BYU stepped in to defeat Kwok 6-2, 6-3, giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

Walsh stepped onto the courts at the No. 3 slot to face Kristina Doerr from the Cougars. The Ute took control of the match for a 6-4, 6-2 win. Next to finish up was senior Cinthia Saucedo at the No. 6 slot. Facing Dolly Chang from the Cougars, the Ute was defeated 6-3, 6-4.

Tying up the overall match for Utah was No. 114 Ferris at the No. 1 slot. The Ute faced Anastasia Surkova from the Cougars for a victorious 7-6(0), 6-4 win. Last on the courts were Maughan from Utah and Sofia Holden from BYU. After being defeated in the first set 6-4, Maughan stepped up her game in a big attempt to take the second set. Unfortunately, Holden kept her hold on things and managed to pull out a 6-4, 7-6(4) win, giving the Cougars the 4-3 overall win.
