TEMPE, ARIZ. - The University of Utah women's tennis team will return home on Sunday after completing the last day of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Elizabeth Ferris and Evgenia Kryunchkova posted wins in singles play, while Ferris and Leigh Walsh dominated their doubles match.
Kryunchkova, whom was defeated in the main draw quarterfinals, played in the quarterfinal back-draw bracket on Sunday. The Ute faced Claire Ilcinkas from California University for a challenge. After a strong run in the main draw competition, Kryunchkova couldn't hold in the final match. Ilcinkas took the match at 6-0, 6-1 over the Ute freshman.
In the consolation bracket, Ferris played in the semifinals against Lindsey Howard from Michigan. The Ute fell in the first set, but snapped back with a 6-2 win in the second set. In the tie breaker, Ferris only allowed Howard to win one game before shutting the match down at 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, the Ute duo had their first win of the tournament. Ferris and Walsh were on fire as they faced Tanvi Dudhela and Kari Wig from Michigan. The Ute duo played a perfect match to take a sweet 8-0 victory over the Michigan duo.
