Kryunchkova Continues in Main Draw Competition

TEMPE, ARIZ. - Elizabeth Ferris, Leigh Walsh, and Evgenia Kryunchkova are currently representing the University of Utah women's tennis team at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Kryunchkova still stands in the main draw competition, while Ferris and Walsh are both battling in the consolation bracket after suffering defeat in the first round.

In the round of 32, Kryunchkova, a true freshman and a native to Russia, faced Chisako Sugiyama, the No. 2 seed from Michigan. The Ute was defeated 6-4 in the first set, but immediately rebounded to take the second set at 6-1. Sugiyama pushed hard to overcome the Ute in the third set, but couldn't seal the deal as Kryunchkova took the set and match at 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the round of 16, the Ute took on Jessica Leitch from Arizona State. Kryunchkova lost again in the first set, but didn't allow the Thunderbird another win. The Ute determined the match for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Leitch to advance into the quarterfinals. The Ute will face Laila Abdala from Arizona State on Saturday.

Ferris, a senior from Anaheim, Calif., fell in the first round to Jen Yen of Stanford (6-3, 6-3) before moving into the consolation bracket where she faced Denise Muresan from Michigan. Playing in the round of 16 of the consolations, Ferris switched up her game to smash a 6-2, 6-3 win to advance into the quarterfinals. The Ute will face Kari Wig from Michigan on Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals.

Walsh, a sophomore from Dublin, Ireland, fell in the first round to Marina Cossou from California University 6-3, 6-1. Moving into the consolation bracket, the Ute took on Amanda Martin from the Arizona State Thunderbirds. Walsh made a swift turn around from her first match to take a 6-3, 6-2 win over Martin. On Saturday the Ute will take on Rika Tatsuno from Michigan in the consolation quarterfinals.
