SALT LAKE CITY - Junior outside hitter Kathryn Haynie was named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII first team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
As a first team selection, Haynie will be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.
Haynie, who is majoring in pre-pharmacy, leads Utah with 3.65 kills per game. She has led the team or tied for the team lead in kills in 14 matches this season. She also leads Utah with 27 service aces. Haynie was named to the Purdue Mortar Board Premier all-tournament team early this season. She has set career-highs in kills (22), aces (4) and digs (15) this year.
Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his or her current institution and be nominated by his or her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
The Utah volleyball team (11-14, 7-7 MWC) closes out the regular season this weekend, beginning Friday, Nov. 16 against UNLV.
