SALT LAKE CITY - Led by Lori Baird's 13 kills, the Utah volleyball team earned its second straight sweep with a 3-0 win over Wyoming, 31-29, 30-28, 31-29.
Baird hit .632 in the match and had eight blocks and two aces. Kathryn Haynie was also in double digits in kills with 11. Karolina Bartkowiak, Kate Robison and Whitney Webb each had nine kills on the night.
With Utah (9-11, 5-5 MWC) up by six points in game one, 28-22, Wyoming (10-10, 4-7 MWC) went on a 7-1 run to tie the game, 29-29. After a timeout, the Utes finished off the game by scoring the final two points, the first off a Cowgirl attack error, and Haynie had a kill for the final point for a 31-29 win. Baird led all players with seven kills in the first game.
In game two, Utah held a slim lead throughout, leading by as many as five during several points in the contest. Up 27-22, a Wyoming drive that was led by Rachel Smith's ace and kill put the Cowgirls within one, 28-27. An attack error by Tasha Weishahn and a kill from Webb gave the Utes the 30-28 victory.
Game three saw the Utes go down by six points early, 8-2, and fight to climb out of the hole. With Wyoming leading by five, 20-15, Utah went on a 7-2 run to tie the game, 22-22. Chelsey Sandberg had two kills of the drive.
Utah used that momentum to take a three-point lead, 28-25, before Wyoming reeled off three straight points to tie the match at 28-28. The teams traded the next two points before the Utes scored the 31-29 win with a kill from Webb and a block from Webb and Baird.
"I am pleased with how we battled back," head coach Beth Launiere said. "We stayed steady and mentally tough, battling back consistently. It was a good win."
Connie Dangerfield recorded 10 digs while Keisha Fisher had 31 assists and nine digs for the Utes.
Wyoming was led by Lauren Whitney's 14 kills, while Smith had 12. Carissa Lee tallied 12 digs and Weishahn came away with 39 assists. Angie Hellbaum led the Cowgirls with seven blocks.
