Fayetteville -- The University of Utah Cross Country team finished ninth with 317 points at the 19th annual Chili Pepper Invitational Saturday. Freshman Lauren Lewis led the Utes as she finished 28th with a time of 21:52.3.
Other top-five performers for the Utes were Alyssa Abbott (81st, 22:19.2), Kellie Anderson (144, 22:34.2), Rebecca Mackelprang (228. 22:57.8), and Chelsea DiGrazia (317, 23:02.6).
"We ran a good race today," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "We weren't at full strength this race due to some illnesses that are going around, but I still feel good about how we placed. We came to compete and they stepped up and answered the call from a big meet."
Texas Tech won the meet with the 83 points and a first-place effort by sally Kipyego with a time of 19:49.2. The University of Arkansas placed second with 87 points, followed by Virginia Tech (130), UC Irvine (195), Oklahoma State (200), University of Texas (224), Texas A&M (233), Richmond (302), Utah (317), James Madison University (337)...
Kepler ends with, "Anytime we finish in the top-ten at this meet it's a sign that this program is moving in the right direction."
The Utes have next week off as they finish their preparations for the Mountain West Conference Championships held on Saturday Oct. 27 in San Diego, Calif.
