Utah Men's Tennis Receive Rankings by the ITA

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team is currently ranked No. 65 in the nation, according to the first listings of the Division I NCAA FILA/ITA Rankings that were released on January 9. Also making an appearance is Zach Ganger and Jason Smits. Ganger is currently ranked No. 45 in the nation in singles play, and tied for No. 44 in the nation with doubles partner Smits.
The men's tennis team ended last season with a No. 61 national ranking, but had climbed as high as No. 48 on the ITA's charts.
Ganger, a junior, received his first singles ranking by the ITA. In the fall, as the singles champion of the Mountain West Regional Tournament, Ganger received an automatic bid into the National Indoor Championship. This was the first time since 1999 that a player from the Utes was invited to participate in the prestigious event. After a loss in the main-draw competion, Ganger moved into the consolation bracket where he dominated Greg Ouellette of Florida, whom was ranked No. 26 at the time. At the completion of the fall season, Ganger compiled a 14-3 singles record and a well earned No. 45 ranking to start off the spring 2007 season with.
In doubles play, Ganger and Smits have tied for a No. 44 national ranking. The duo had a great fall season, including their play in the Mountain West Regional Tournament. They competed into the Quarterfinals of the tournament where they had their first loss of the season playing against Blake Boswell and Eric Roberson of Boise State. The duo ended the fall schedule with an impressive 6-1 record.
