THIS WEEK: The University of Utah track and field team heads to Provo, Utah for the Mountain West Conference Championship tomorrow. The meet will be held Wednesday through Saturday, May 10-13 at the Clarence Robison Track.
UTE NOTES: Susan Atwater broke the NCAA Regional Qualifying mark in the pole vault last week, obtaining a personal best and third-place on Utah's all-time top-ten list. In addition, pole vaulter Trisha Wagner is back from an injury and ready to compete in the Championships.
LAST TIME OUT: The Utes saw three event champions tonight as Amanda Feigt, AJ Roby and Vanessa Mortensen all took home event titles. Feigt won the long jump (19-2), Roby the discus (157-1 ½) and Mortensen the hammer throw (189-8).
Three Utes turned in regional-qualifying marks as well. Roby was a regional qualifier in the discus while Mortensen posted a qualifying mark in the hammer. Mortensen had already qualified in the hammer previously this year. The third mark came from Susan Atwater who finished second in the pole vault. She topped the 12-foot mark with a regional-qualifying mark of 12-5 ½.
A pair of second-place showings also highlight the Utes' efforts tonight. Jen Cutrer turned in a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles. She clocked it 14.44, the second-best time by Cutrer this year. The other second-place finish came from Roby, who took runner-up in the shot put (45-6).
The Utes also had a bevy of third-place finishes. Haley McAllister was third in the 100m (12.64) while Feigt (14.67, 100m hurdles) and Ashley Patterson (25.61, 200m) were also third in their respective events. Other performances of note came from Trisha Wagner, Nicki Hugie and Chastity Toilolo. Wagner took fourth in the pole vault (12-2) while Hugie turned in her best performance of the season in the 800m. She raced it in 2:20.79. Toilolo PR'd in the shot put with a 41-4 effort. She finished sixth.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Kyle Kepler: "The conference meet always serves as a measuring stick of where your program is. Our women understand this and have prepared themselves to compete at their highest level of the season. If we focus on what we are capable of doing, rather than what everyone else is doing, we should see several personal bests and improvement up and down our line-up."
