Utes Head to NCAA West Regional in Provo

THIS WEEK: The University of Utah Track and Field team heads to Provo, Utah for the NCAA Regionals. The meet will be held Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 27 at the Clarence F. Robison Track.
Ute women competing at this event will be Amanda Feigt (400m hurdles and long jump), Jen Fresques (400m hurdles), Vanessa Mortensen (hammer throw), AJ Roby (shot put and discus), and Susan Atwater (pole vault).
MEET PREVIEW: 32 track and field teams will have athletes competing at the Regional.
LAST TIME OUT: The Utes are fresh off the Mountain West Conference Championships in which a dozen Ute athletes turned in 18 personal-best performances. In addition the Utes chalked up 15 top-10 all-time marks including three school records. Utah finished the championships in sixth place with 65 points. That was a mere 2.5 points shy of fifth-place New Mexico.
Among Utah's results were four all-conference performances. Leading the way was Vanessa Mortensen's championship throw in the hammer. She won the event with a school-record toss of 205-0. It was also a new Danish National record. Amanda Feigt turned in two all-conference marks. She finished third in the heptathlon (5195 pts) and second in the long jump (19-8). Also landing on the all-conference team was AJ Roby who took second in the shot put (47-3 ½).
Solid showings also came from Nikki Mancinelli in high jump and Jennifer Fresques. Mancinelli finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5-4 ½ while Fresques turned in a regional-qualifying mark in the 400m hurdles (fifth, 60.42).
While those three etched their name in the conference annals, another 21 student-athletes were busy re-writing the Utah record book. In addition to Mortensen's record-setting throw in the hammer, Roby set the school's discus record in hurling it 162-4. The 4x100m relay team also chalked up a brand new standard. The team of Jennifer Cutrer, Haley McAllister, Ashley Patterson and Feigt broke the school record with a time of 47.18. Other performances of note that cracked the school's all-time top 10 are: Cutrer in the 100m hurdles (second, 14.03); Feigt in the heptathlon (second, 5195) and 400m hurdles (third, 60.68); Patterson in the 200m (second, 25.09); the 4x400m relay team of Jennifer Fresques, Candice Mannion, Feigt and Patterson (second, 3:43.03); and Roby in the shot put (third, 47-3 ½).
QUOTING HEAD COACH Kyle Kepler: "The West Region is one of the most competitive regions in the country. I think all of our athletes are ready to perform at their highest level of the year. As long as they do that the results will take care of themselves. All the work has been done at this point. It is simply up to them to handle the pressure and mentally prepare themselves to be successful."
