Mortensen, Feight Take Crowns at Wildcat Invitational

OGDEN, Utah - The University of Utah track and field team continued to show improvement at only its second outdoor meet of the season. The Utes were buoyed by their two first-place finishers at the non-scoring Wildcat Invitational today.
Senior Vanessa Mortensen and junior Amanda Feight each won crowns at the all-day event. Mortensen won the hammer throw and Feight the long jump. Mortensen turned in an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 198-5 in the hammer throw, one inch shy of a personal best, while Feight won the long jump crown with a leap of 18-9. Mortensen is the team's first Regional qualifier yet this season.
While the two event champions recorded solid performances, so too was the all-around showing of the entire team.
"Overall, I think that we had a solid showing at the Wildcat Invitational this afternoon," said track and field head coach Kyle Kepler. "We definitely showed improvement in only the second week of the outdoor season. We were able to make the necessary improvements from last week's outing and showed that we are capable of putting the pieces together to become a competitive team.
"We've got a lot of work ahead of us this outdoor season but it's obvious that we have a solid foundation from which to build upon."
The Utes also saw a pair of second-place finishers in Janett Ern and in the 4x100m relay team. Ern took runner-up in the 1500m (4:46.90) while the 4x100m relay team of Jennifer Cutrer, Haley McAllister, Candice Mannion and Feight turned in a 47.49 performance.
It was a 1-3 showing for the Utes in the high jump. While Feight won the high jump crown, McAllister took third with a 17-11 showing. AJ Roby's personal record of 46-1 1/2 was good enough for third as was Nicole Mancinelli's 5-2 1/2 leap in the high jump. Roby also took third in discus (144-1).
Cutrer tallied a fourth-place finish in the 100m hurdles to go along with her 4x100m relay showing. She finished the sprint in 14.40.
The Utes also turned in a couple top-five showings. Susan Atwater and Mandie Rowell both had 11-6 efforts in the pole vault, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively; while McAllister (25.58) and Cutrer (25.68) also took five-six in the 400m.
