Salt Lake City- Freshman Alyssa Abbott led the University of Utah cross country team as it finished sixth at the MWC Championships here at Rose Park Golf Course this morning. Abbott clocked the 6k course in 22:48.2. She placed 22nd of 64.
Utah took sixth place with a total of 156 points. Winning the MWC Championship was Brigham Young University with 35 points, while Colorado State (44 points, second), New Mexico (94 points, third), Wyoming (113 points, fourth), TCU (121 points, fifth), Air Force (159 points, seventh), San Diego State (203 points, eighth), and UNLV (266 points, ninth), rounding out the rest of the league's finishers.
"I am really proud of our athletes today," Coach Kyle Kepler said. "We really stepped it up today, we have come a long way in a short amount of time. They all stepped up their game today and this is another step forward for the Utah cross country program."
Also scoring for the Utes were Rebecca Mackelprang (27th, 22:53.1), Stephanie Skoreyko (32nd, 23:09.1), Lauren Endersen (36th, 23:28.7), and Kellie Anderson (39th, 23:41.9).
Kepler ends with, "I would like to thank all the people who were involved in the meet the administration and the conference. The meet couldn't have gone off any better."
Kassie Anderson from BYU won the race. She paced everyone by finishing first in 20:52.7
The Utes return to action Nov. 11 in Albuquerque, N.M. for the NCAA Mountain Regional Championship at 11 a.m.
