Women's Tennis Continue in Region Tourney

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team ended day two of the Wilson ITA Central Regional Tournament on Thursday at Eccles Tennis Center with three singles players and two doubles team continuing in the main draw competition.

Elizabeth Ferris began play in the Round of 64 against Chie Hayasaka of BYU. The Ute slid by in the first set with a 7-5 win, but the Cougar answered back 6-3 in the second set. After the back-and-forth battle, Ferris pushed for to take the third set and the match 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. The Ute will face Martina Sedevic of Colorado on Friday at 10:00 a.m.

Leigh Walsh faced Stacey Housley of Boise State in the Round of 64. Housley took the first set 6-4. Walsh stepped up her game to take the next two sets 6-3 over her opponent. The Ute will advance into the Round of 32 on Friday against Anastasia Sourkova of BYU.

Emily Kwok had several stand-out performances in singles and doubles on Thursday. In singles play, the Ute took on Gabi Venditto of Weber State in the Round of 64. It was a three set battle, but the Ute smashed out a 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 win over Venditto. On Friday she will face Nicole Luetolf of Montana in the Round of 32. In doubles play, Kwok teamed up with Cheyenne Reveche. The duo faced Leisel Lewis and Stephanie Roldan of Idaho State for an 8-3 win in the Round of 64. The Utes advanced into the next round to compete against Corina Lazar and Sarah Summerfield of Wyoming. The Utes lassoed the Cowboys for an 8-1 win, which will advance them into the Round of 16 on Friday. They will face Sofia Holden and Lauren Jones of BYU at 4:00 p.m. at Eccles Tennis Center.

Ferris and Walsh teamed up for doubles play. After receiving a bye in the Round of 64, the duo took on Danni Paulson and Cheyene Ursich of Montana. The Utes took the set 8-3 which will advance them into the Round of 16 on Friday to face Tiffany Coll and Bianca Jochimsen of Boise State. Competition will begin at 4:00 p.m.
