Las Vegas, Nev. - The University of Utah men's tennis team finished day one of the Wilson ITA Mountain West Regional Tournament on Wednesday sending three singles players and one doubles team into the Round of 32.

Jason Smits, a freshman from Ontario, Canada, is one of three Utah players to advance into the Round of 64 in the regional tournament. After receiving a bye in the round of 128, the No. 27 seeded Smits took on conference opponent Wes Burrows of UNLV. The Ute took control of the match by shutting down the first set 6-1. The Rebel tried to come back in the second set, but Smits took the set 6-4 and the match to advance him into the Round of 32. The Ute will battle the No. 9 seeded Dominik Kaufhold of BYU on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

Junior Zach Ganger, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, also received a bye in the round of 128, but faced Robby Alexander of Air Force in the Round of 64. Ganger closed out the first set 6-1, but Alexander challenged the Ute in the second set. The two battled back-and-forth through the set, but Ganger stepped it up to take the set at 7-5. The Ute will face conference opponent Brett Hunter of UNLV on Thursday at 12:00 p.m.

Wes Hancock, a sophomore and native to St. George, Utah, shut down his opponent in the round of 64 on Wednesday. After receiving a bye in the Round of 128, Hancock faced David Kovas of Montana State. The Ute took the first set 6-1, and continued his streak into the second set. Without letting up on the Bobcat, Hancock shut out the set 6-0 for a match score 6-1, 6-0. The Ute will play James Ludlow of BYU on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

After receiving a bye in the Round of 64 in doubles play, the No. 4 seeded Ganger and Smits will compete on Thursday in the Round of 32 against David Kovas and Myles Perkins of Montana State at 4:30 p.m.
