THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving team will open up the 2006-07 season on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Beehive Relays in Provo, Utah. The relays will be a non-scoring meet and will begin at 6:00 p.m. Two days later, on Saturday Oct. 21, the Utes will open up at home against the University of Denver. The meet will take place at the Ute Natatorium, with a start time of 11:30 a.m.
UTE NOTES:
The Utah women are coming off their third straight Mountain West Conference regular-season championship and first conference championship. The Utes finished 9-1 in dual meet competition and 8-0 in conference dual meets.
The men's team is coming off a 4-3 season last year, with a 2-3 mark in the Mountain West Conference. Utah led the conference championships after two days of competition, but ended up finishing fifth. The Utes look to be an improved squad all around this season.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
Beehive Relays-The Beehive Relays will be a non-scoring, relay meet, in which Utah will compete against Brigham Young. The meet will give the Utes a chance to compete in traditional as well as non-traditional relay events and will kick off the 2006-07 campaign.
Denver-On the women's side, Denver is the only team to beat Utah in the last year. The meet will feature several match-ups to keep an eye on. In the freestyle events Denver returns Karen Iverson who won the 200 free against Utah last season. Utah will rely on school record holder Alison McIntruff to compete with Iverson in the 200 free. In the backstroke events Denver's Kelsey Totura will go against Utah's Marissa Martin, Totura won both events in the last meeting. The men's side will feature a strong Denver diving squad led by Aaron Feight. Utah will counter with Damien Brown on the diving side. The backstroke will feature Andrew Cole for Utah, who holds the MWC's fastest time in the 200 back, against Denver's Craig Jollands.
QUOTING COACH Michael Litzinger:
"The Beehive Relays is a great opportunity to get of the blocks and see some of our new faces in a competition setting. We will have a chance to swim some non-traditional events and it should be fun for us."
