LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Utah men's swimming and diving teams hold a 114-110 lead over Wyoming, while the women hold a 133-90 edge over the Cowgirls. The men won five of the 12 swimming events, while the women won seven of the 12 swimming events. The women also set three Corbett Pool records in the 200 free, 200 back and 400 medley relay.
The final scores will be determined tomorrow after the conclusion of the Air Force Diving Invitational. However, the Utah women's team has already clinched a victory over the Cowgirls to improve to 7-1 overall, 6-0 MWC, regardless of the diving results.
"We handled a really tough Wyoming team," said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "They always swim really tough at home and it's always hard to come to Laramie and swim fast, but our teams handled it pretty well. They gave us more than we could handle and we're lucky to come out on top."
For the women, Amber Walter helped the Utes win three events, winning two individual events and one relay event. Walter posted a time of 23.77 seconds in the 50 free and finished the 100 free in 52.17 seconds to win both events. Walter was also a member of the winning 400 medley relay team along with Marissa Martin, Jennifer Fredsall and Alison McInturff which set a new Corbett Pool record of 3 minutes, 55.40 seconds.
Alison McInturff took top honors in the 200 free with a time of 1 minute, 53.79 seconds, which is a new Corbett Pool record. McInturff also finished second in the 100 free with a time of 53.13 seconds and was also a member of the first-place 400 medley relay team.
Adrienne Coburn, Fredsall and Shannon McQueen each picked up individual event wins for the Utes. Coburn won the 200 IM with a time of 2 minutes, 11.31 seconds. Fredsall took top honors in the 200 fly with a time of 2 minutes, 11.63 seconds and McQueen won the 200 back with a time of 2 minutes, 05.93 seconds, which is also a pool record.
On the men's side, Jonathan Larsen helped the Utes win three events, one individual and two relay events. Larsen won the 100 free with a time of 45.63 seconds. The senior also competed on the winning 400 medley relay team (3:29.30) and the 400 free relay team (3:09.05).
The men's meet came down to the final event, the 400 free relay, with the Utes needing to finish first and third to gain an edge after the swimming events. The Utes team of David Johnson, Michel DeCarolis, Jeremy Clark and Larsen took top honors, while the team of Matthew Bailey, Nick Philpot, Tanner Folster and Adam Oliver finished third (3:12.08).
David Maasberg and Bailey finished first and second in the 50 free. Maasberg finished in 21.59 seconds, while Bailey finished in 21.62 seconds. Andrew Cole took top honors in the 200 back with a time of 1 minute, 54.05 seconds, while Johnson finished in 1 minute, 54.88 seconds to place second in the event.
The Utes travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Air Force tomorrow at 1 p.m. The final scores for the Wyoming meet will be posted with the results of the Air Force recap.
