OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - UNLV captured its first-ever Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Championships tonight at Oklahoma City Community College. The men's team finished with 839 points, followed by BYU (745.50), Wyoming (592), Utah (560.50) and Air Force (403). The women tallied 701.50 points, besting second-place BYU (670). Utah finished third in women's action with 607 points, followed by Colorado State (489), Wyoming (431), New Mexico (387), Air Force (221.50) and San Diego State (153).
Senior Marta Stepanczuk set a new Mountain West Conference all-time record, as well as a Utah school record, in the women's 1650-yard (mile) freestyle with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:32.83. The previous MWC all-time record was 16:35.31 by Alyson Noble (UNLV) in 2001.
Sophomore Alison McInturff provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in with a time of 50.86. Jonathan Larsen defended his men's 100-yard freestyle title with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 44.23. The top-six finishers in the 100 free all provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship.
Freshman Michelle Blair claimed the MWC title in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.83. Senior Cody Rempfer claimed top honors in the 200-yard butterfly, and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship, with a time of 1:46.61.
Among the 2005 MWC award winners, Rempfer was awarded the Sportsmanship Award, while sophomore Kelsey Patterson was name Co-diver of the Year along with New Mexico's Becca Barras.
