DENVER, Colo. - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams split against Denver in the second day of competition. The men beat the Pioneers 193-141, improving to 2-0 on the season, while the women fell 157-175 to fall to 1-1 on the season and snap their streak of 10 straight dual-meet wins.
The men's team won 12 of the 18 events, setting a Denver pool record of 1 minute, 23.39 seconds in the 200 free relay with Matthew Bailey, David Maasberg, David Johnson and Jonathan Larsen competing for the Utes.
Larsen picked up his second straight win in the 100 free, finishing in 45.10 seconds, beating Denver's Matt Diotte to the wall by 1.28 seconds. Jeremy Clark (4:41.46), Eric Jorgensen (4:43.27) and Adam Oliver (4:45.76) swept the top three spots in the 500 free respectively; marking the only event Utah claimed the top three spots on the second day of competition.
Andrew Brown took top honors in the 100 fly, his second win of the meet, with a time of 51.77 seconds. Sterling Richards won the 3-meter diving event with 362.95 points, 28.90 points more than second place, to sweep both diving events for the second straight meet.
Andrew Cole finished second in the 200 back (1:53.66) and Oliver finished third in the event with a time of 1 minute, 55.57 seconds. Nick Philpot placed second in the 400 IM with a time of 4 minutes, 17.66 seconds.
For the women, freshman Jennifer Fredsall took top honors in the 100 fly with a time of 56.81 seconds, marking her second individual win against Denver. Michelle Blair placed third in the 100 fly, finishing in 59.83 seconds. Junior Kelsey Patterson scored 274.45 points to win the 1-meter board event, 44 points ahead of second place, sweeping both diving events for the first time this year. Utah's 200 free relay team of Amber Walter, Amy Barefield, Fredsall and Alison McInturff won the 200 free relay with a time of 1 minute, 35.85 seconds.
Marissa Martin placed second in the 200 back (2:06.08), while McInturff finished second in the 100 free in 52.66 seconds, .12 seconds behind first place. Rachael Curci placed second in the 500 free, finishing with a time of 5 minutes, 08.91 seconds. In the 400 IM, Adrienne Coburn finished second (4:40.14) and Martin placed third with a time of 4 minutes, 42.42 seconds.
"Denver swam a good meet," said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "Our men gave a good performance, but we are a little disappointed with the women's loss. However, our focus has to quickly shift to our next meets against San Diego State and UNLV next weekend."
The women are back in action Friday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. against the Aztecs of San Diego State in the Utes' first MWC dual meet of the season. On Saturday, Nov. 12, the men and women take on the Runnin' Rebels of UNLV at noon.
