SAN DIEGO - The University of Utah volleyball team (19-8, 11-5 MWC) dropped its regular season finale to San Diego State here tonight, 3-1.
Game scores were 30-28, 30-27, 28-30 and 30-17 as the Aztecs improve to 16-13 overall and 8-8 in league play.
"We hit okay but we couldn't stop San Diego State's offense tonight," head coach Beth Launiere said. "San Diego State played well but we gave up a lot of runs and key points during the match. We just couldn't get over the hump tonight.
"San Diego State hit for more than double our opponents' hitting percentage. It's hard for us to win when a team hits that well against us."
Utah hit a smooth .265 for the night but couldn't overcome SDSU's offense that collected kills at a .333 clip. The Utes were out-hitting their rivals heading into the fourth game, .324-.316, but Utah hit just.103 in the fourth frame as it fell to home team by 13 points.
Shelly Sommerfeldt turned in her usual double-double with 20 kills and 15 digs. Airial Salvo was the only other double-digit kills leader for Utah, racking up 12 for the night.
Shannon Krug set the attack in dishing out 47 assists. She chimed in with seven digs and five total blocks as well.
Utah held the slim 13-12 edge in team blocks and was led by Emillie Toone's seven total blocks. Krug added five and Sommerfeldt chipped in with four. Sommerfeldt's 15 digs led all Utes.
Five Aztec spikers hit .300 or better, led by Lindsey Noll who got 14 kills on .571 hitting. Audra Dent led the team in kills with 23. Kristen Cstillo and Leah Lathrop set the attack in handing out 37 and 30 assists, respectively. The defense was led by Aime Cordeiro's 24 digs while Noll's seven total blocks led the home team.
The season continues when Utah plays in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 24, in Las Vegas. The time and opponent will be officially set on Sunday, Nov. 20.
