Kepler Signs Two to National Letter of Intent

SALT LAKE CITY -- Track and field head coach Kyle Kepler has announced the signing of thrower Sarah Cardinal (Blackfoot, Idaho/Blackfoot HS) and hurdler Chelsey Kaplar (Highland/Lone Peak HS) to national letters of intent on Wednesday.
"Overall, I'm happy with these signings," Kepler remarked. "Both of these student-athletes are not just good athletes but they are great students and great people. They come from very supportive families and will help this program improve at the conference, regional and national levels."
Cardinal comes to Utah having won three state titles in the discus and two in the shot put. She was the 2005 Golden West champion in the hammer throw and twice won the weight throw at the Simplot Games. Her best efforts include a 150-8 tally in the discus, a 43-1 1/4 toss in the shot put, a 152-4 throw in the hammer event and a 49-7 mark in the weight throw.
"Sarah has tremendous potential in multiple throwing events," said Kepler. "She has the ability to compete at the highest level. Our throws program has been an area of great strength for this team over the years and I have no doubt that she will add to that tradition."
Kaplar is a two-time regional champion in the hurdles, taking the title in both the 2004 and `05 seasons. In addition to holding her school record in the 300m hurdles, she capped off her junior year by taking fourth at state in the 100m hurdles and seventh in the 300m hurdles. Kaplar joins her sister on the Ute track squad. Junior Jennifer Kaplar-Cutrer is also a hurdler on the team.
"Chelsey is a very raw talent with a huge up-side," commented Kepler. "She has a great work ethic and with her kind of talent, we really think she will develop into a great hurdler here at Utah."
