Utah Track And Field To Split Sites This Weekend

THIS WEEK:
The Utes will split up competition sites this weekend. Some Utes will compete in the Oregon Invitational in Eugene, Ore., while the rest will travel to Provo, Utah, for the Clarence Robison Invitational. Both invites will take place on Saturday, April 24.
With the outstanding number of entries for the Oregon Invitational, only those Utes meeting the qualifying standards will compete this weekend. Complete results for the Oregon Invitational will be posted at Oregon's website.

QUOTING HEAD COACH Lisa Archer:
"The Oregon Invitational is going to be very competitive," explains Archer. "We are hoping this will push our athletes, and lead to more personal records and qualifying times."
LAST MEET:
The University of Utah outdoor track and field teams finished competition for the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Saturday, April 17. Held at Utah State's Ralph Maughn Track Stadium, the meet featured athletes from Utah, Utah State, Weber State, Utah Valley State College and Idaho State.
Leading the way for the women were Amanda Feigt, Nellie Hammons, Jen Jackman, Jennie Haertel, Susan Atwater and Katie Decker who all notched first-place finishes in their respective events. Jackman took gold in the 400-meter dash (55.82) and finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with 14.40. Feigt won the triple jump (11.78m), Hammons won the 800m (2:08.56), Haertel won the 1,500m (4:41.67) and Decker won the high jump (1.73m). Hammon's mark in the 800 is an NCAA qualifying mark and ranks first in the Mountain West Conference and 20th in the nation. Atwater, a freshman, had a great meet tying for first in the pole vault with a height of 3.51m.
The women's team also got strong performances from Vanessa Mortensen, Aubry Startin and the 4X400m relay team. Mortensen finished second the hammer (56.67m), but was the highest placing attached athlete. Startin finished second in the high jump (1.67m), and the 4X400m relay team finished first with 3:50.87.
On the men's side, veteran Nephi Tyler won the 1,500m (3:53.41).
UTES ON THE RUN:
Senior Delfino Arevalo competed in the Mt. SAC relays last weekend. Arevalo finished 12th in the 10K race. His time of 29:06.50 is an NCAA qualifying mark, and ranks first in the conference and 10th in the country.
Junior Jen Jackman is having a great year in several events. Jackman has not only been Utah's best hurdler, but has been one the best competitors in the 400m. She ranks within the top ten in the conference in three events. The Park City, Utah, native ranks sixth in the 400m (55.93) and the 400m-hurdles (1:00.37), and eighth in the 100m-hurdles (1:00.37).
Nephi Tyler has had a strong outdoor season in the 1,500m. The senior has taken gold in two out of the three 1,500 races he has competed in this season. Tyler currently ranks seventh (3:48.96) in the conference.
MIGHTY FROSH:
In her first pole vaulting competition of the year Susan Atwater found herself in a four-way tie for first place. Atwater's debut in the outdoor season earned her a ranking of 10th in the conference (3.51m).
Jennie Haertel is Utah's biggest surprise of the track season. After an impressive fifth-place finish in the mile at the MWC Indoor Track Championships, Haertel has continued to improve in the 1,500m and distance events. Her performance in last week's Mark Faldmo Invitational moved her up to 11th in the conference in the 1,500 rankings.

Lauren Browning returns to competition this weekend after missing last week. Browning had injured herself during a hurdle event at the Wildcat Invitational

The Utes will compete in the BYU Collegiate Invitational in Provo, Utah, on Saturday, May 1.
