SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team dropped to No. 44 Oklahoma State 6-1 at a neutral site on the University of San Diego campus. With the loss, Utah drops to 7-7 on the season.
In doubles, the Utes won at the No. 1 but did not get the point. Senior Roeland Brateanu teamed up with freshman Miron Mann and pulled out a close win over Yevgan Bondarchuk and Boris Kuharic (8-6). Sophomores Tomasz Gryzb and Nick Coutts played hard at the No. 2 but lost to Mark Van Elden and Daniel Byrnes (8-6). At the No. 3, sophomore Mike Bullard and freshman Dantley Young were shut down by Tomas Bohunicky and Juan Felipe Diaz (8-0).
Despite the effort in singles, Utah dropped at all positions but one. After a tough three set tiebreaker, Gryzb walked away with a ((3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (14-12)) win over Bondarchuk at the No. 3. The first loss came at the No. 1 when Brateanu faced No. 55 Van Elden (6-2, 6-1). Mann fell (6-3, 6-4) to Bohunicky at the No. 2 and Young dropped (6-3, 6-2) to Kuharic at the No. 4. At the No. 5, Coutts fought it out three sets against Byrnes but eventually lost (6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4). Freshman Ryan Scott played at the No. 6 and was conquered by Diaz (6-2, 6-2).
Utah is next in action against Minnesota on Thursday, March 18 in San Diego.
