SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 win over the University of Nevada at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes improve to 5-3 on the season.
Utah won two of the three doubles matches and managed to get the point. Senior Sheri Esrock teamed up with freshman Cinthia Saucedo at the No. 1 and downed Bachlan Pham and Myriam Bouchlaka (8-5). At the No. 2, freshmen Whitney Eber and Jessica Watts conquered Kristen Davenport and Fionella Velez (8-4). Senior Rachel Alder and sophomore Jenessa Jackson played at the No. 3 and fell to Cherie Pettersson and Christine Tilley (8-3).
In singles play, the Utes picked up wins at five spots. At the No. 1, Esrock came back after a slow start to beat Pham (1-6, 6-1, 6-3). Eber blanked Bouchlaka (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 2 and Saucedo downed Velez (6-2, 6-1) at the No. 3. Watts beat Davenport (6-0, 6-1) at the No. 4 and Alder topped Tilley (6-4, 6-1) at the No. 6. Jackson fared well at the No. 5 but was defeated by Pettersson (6-3, 6-3).
Head Coach Megan Dorny comments on the match. "Today, I thought as a team we started out a little bit flat in a match we knew we could win. I was a little disappointed we didn't get the doubles down on three. Thats a new team though and we are just kind of working on some different combinations right now. Hopefully, we'll get three teams that we'll feel confident about. We're going to still do some work with our doubles."
"The singles went well. We had a couple get off to really slow starts. Again, just playing a little nervous and a little tight but by the end of the match we were all playing pretty dominant tennis. Jenessa was the only loss in singles. That's a little higher spot for her. She really could have won that match though, she just got off to a slow start. We were glad to pull out a couples wins this weekend, especially as we go into next week. BYU is a pretty good team, so it will be nice to go into that match with a couple of wins under our belt."
