MORAGA, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team wrapped up their first match on the road with a 5-2 win over Saint Mary's on Feb. 21, 2004.
Utah started out strong with three wins in the doubles. Senior Roeland Brateanu and freshman Miron Mann teamed up at the No. 1 and downed Rafael Lopez and Adam Fauvre (8-6). At the No. 2, sophomore Tomasz Gryzb and freshman Ryan Scott crushed Dino Ferrari and Vincent Leborgne (8-4). Sophomore Nick Coutts and freshman Jason Yap picked up the third win, defeating Timothy Welty and Martin Marechal (8-5) at the No. 3.
In singles, the Utes dominated at all but two spots. Brateanu, playing at the No. 1, downed Marechal (6-3, 6-2). Gryzb defeated Lopez (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 2. At the No. 4, Coutts held on to a close (7-6, 7-5) win over Fauvre, while freshman Dantley Young went three sets to beat Welty (2-6, 6-4, 6-0) at the No. 6. Mann fared well at the No. 3 but fell to Leborgne (6-3, 7-6). Scott fought hard at the No. 5 but came up short to Ferrari in the tiebreaker (2-6, 7-6, (10-5)).
Assistant Coach Graeme Cox comments on the match: "The team played well today for the first time they have played ouside since the fall. We had a very limited preparation due to the poor weather, but we were able to rise up and play well under difficult circumstances. Today's effort proves that we have the potential to be a mature and disciplined team."
