OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving team is in fourth-place on both sides of competition at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championships. The men dropped from second after two days of challenging for the lead, due to a disqualification in the 400 medley relay. After three days of competition they have 390 points. On the women's side, the Utes remain in fourth, with 353 points, heading into the final day of competition.
Evan Castro swam an NCAAB provisional qualifying time in the 100 breast. His time of 54.39 was good for second and will make him the first Ute swimmer in six years to qualify to participate in the NCAA Championships. Cody Rempfer finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 3:54.98. Matan Ratz finished in third in the 200 free at 139.98. The 400 medley relay team was disqualified from the event. The time that they swam would have been good enough to win.
For the women, Tessa Greegor finished fourth in the 100 breast. She put up an NCAAB provisional qualifying time of 1:03.85. Meghan Demchuk finished third in the 100 fly (56.84), while Kristen Kaiser added a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM, coming in at 4:27.24. Marta Stepanczuk placed fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.51. The 400 medley relay team of Erin O'Connor, Tessa Greegor, Meghan Demchuk and Amy Barefield finished fourth with a time of 3:49.01. "We swam very solid today, now we have got to make a move on UNLV on Saturday," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger.
Four-time defending conference champion BYU leads the men's and women's field with 521 and 497 points, UNLV trails the Cougars in men's action with 430 points, followed by Air Force (401), Utah (390) and Wyoming (306). The Rams hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 422.50 points, followed by UNLV (399), Utah (353), New Mexico (245), Wyoming (201), Air Force (197) and San Diego State (157.50).
