SALT LAKE CITY -
Charlie Dickey, a 13-year assistant coach in the Pacific-10 conference, is the new offensive line coach at Utah, head coach Kyle Whittingham announced today.
Dickey spent the 2004 season at Washington after a 12-year tenure at Arizona. He was the offensive line coach at Arizona from 1991-2002 and coached the tight ends in 2003 before going to UW as the offensive line coach.
"Charlie is a proven line coach," says Whittingham. "He is experienced, knowledgeable and an excellent recruiter. He brings a toughness to that position. Everyone I checked with had good things to say about Charlie."
During his time with the Wildcats he developed a number of players who earned all-Pac-10 honors. Yusuf Scott won the 1998 Morris Trophy award, which goes to the conference's outstanding offensive lineman.
Eleven UA offensive linemen moved onto active NFL rosters after playing for Dickey. Among Dickey's pupils to advance to the NFL is Edwin Mulitalo, the starting left guard for Baltimore Ravens' Super Bowl team. Other recent draft picks include Yusuf Scott (Arizona), Frank Middleton (Tampa Bay) and Makoa Freitas (Indianapolis). Jose Portilla (Atlanta), Steven Grace (Arizona) and Marques McFadden (Dallas) made the NFL via free agency.
Dickey's first two coaching stops were at schools he attended as an undergraduate. In 1988, a year after graduating from Arizona, he served as a Wildcat graduate assistant. In 1989, he coached the offensive line at his former junior college--Scottsdale Community College. His last stop prior to Arizona was Northern Arizona, where he coached the offensive line from 1990-91.
Dickey was a standout offensive guard at Arizona in 1983-84, playing every snap during the 1983 season. He transfered to UA for the 1983 season after an all-conference career at Scottsdale Community College. Dickey started two seasons at offensive guard for the Wildcats, earning second-team all-Pac-10 honors in 1984, and was voted the team's offensive Most Valuable Player. He graduated from Arizona in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
He is married to the former Lisa Bradshaw, a women's basketball player at Arizona from 1983-85. They have three daughters, Jazmin, Tasha, Shyanne, and a son, Charles J. Their fifth child, daughter Chanel, passed away at the age of 3.
