Alex Smith Is Named Academic All-American Of The Year

SALT LAKE CITY -
The 2004 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), was announced today and Utah was the only school with two players represented. Junior quarterback Alex Smith was named the Football Academic All-American of the Year and senior free safety Morgan Scalley became Utah's first-ever two-time first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Smith, a Davey O'Brien finalist, and a Walter Camp and Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports National Player of the Year finalist, is in the master's program in economics at Utah. He earned his bachelor's degree in economics in just two years, graduating with a 3.74 cumulative GPA. Scalley also graduated last May with a bachelor's degree in mass communications and a 3.96 GPA. He is currently pursuing an MBA.
Both Smith--a Heisman Trophy semifinalist--and Scalley were unanimous first-team all-Mountain West Conference selections. Smith was voted the MWC Offensive Player of the Year and Scalley the co-Defensive Player of the Year. Last year as a junior, Scalley became Utah's first football CoSIDA All-American since 1976 and just its fourth ever.
