Women's Swimming and Diving Dominates UNLV

LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team defeated UNLV 141-97, while the men's team lost to the Runnin' Rebels 116-125 after losing the final relay event. The women improve to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the MWC, while the men fall to 0-2 on the year, 0-1 MWC.
The women's team posted first place finishes in 11 of the 13 events. Senior Marta Stepanczuk took top honors in the 1000 free (10:11.27) and the 500 free (4:58.00), while sophomore Rachael Curci finished second in the 1000 free (10:16.26) and 500 free (5:06.80). Sophomore Alison McInturff finished first in the 200 free and the 100 free with times of 1:52.90 and 51.94 respectively.
Utah's 400 medley relay team of Marissa Martin, Ariane Kich, Michelle Blair and Amy Barefield, finished first with a time of 3:27.65. Blair also won the 200 fly (2:06.43) and Martin won the 200 back (2:04.95). Senior Jamie Trapp finished first in the 200 IM (2:07.72) and Barefield won the 50 free with a time of 24.22.
In the diving competitions, sophomore Kelsey Patterson won the 1-meter and 3-meter events for the third straight meet. Patterson posted scores of 230.40 in the 1-meter and 270.00 in the 3-meter events.
On the men's side, Utah won seven of the 13 events. Senior Cody Rempfer led the Utes with two individual wins in the 200 fly and the 200 IM. Rempfer finished the 200 fly with a time of 1:48.76 and the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.45. Jonathan Larsen won the 50 free with a time of 21.17 for the second straight meet. Sophomore Andrew Cole won the 200 back for the men with a time of 1:51.38.
Sterling Richards finished first in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events for the second straight meet. Richards finished with scores of 289.43 in the 1-meter and 265.63 in the 3-meter events.
"I'm extremely proud of our women's team," says Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "They took it to one of the best teams in our conference. The women are out to prove something, and they are well on their way to accomplish that at the end of the year.
"Our men lost another heartbreaker, UNLV beat a top-ranked Arizona State team last week, and our guys went stroke for stroke with them. Our older guys are performing great, and we need to bring our younger guys along, which we will."
