SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah cross country teams finished competition for the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30. Hosted by San Diego State at Morley Field, the meet featured all MWC Cross Country Squads. Utah's women's team earned a 4th place finish while the women placed 5th.
The BYU Cougars captured the men and women's team titles. The 12th ranked Cougar women's team finished with 24 points, while the No. 10 BYU men's squad finished with 39 points. For the women, BYU brought home its sixth consecutive conference title, while the men brought home their fifth conference title in six years.
BYU senior Laura Turner paced the field with a time of 21:23 to claim the women's individual title. New Mexico freshman Shadrack Biwott won the men's individual title, with a time of 24:44.
The Ute women participated in the 6,000-meter race and scored 118 points. Junior Elise Greenwood-Bahr led the team with a 5-place finish (22:21), and earned MWC All-Conference First Team Honors. Senior Nellie Hammons finished 16th, followed by senior Charity Vernon at 27th and junior Jenny Gustavson at 37th.
The men's team competed in the 8,000-meter race and scored 127 points. Senior Delfino Arevalo led the way with 12th place finish (24:53.2), and earned MWC All-Conference second team honors. Freshman Vance Twitchell finished 22nd, followed by senior Colby Frazier at 33rd and junior Kurt Michels at 36th.
