TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The University of Utah cross country teams finished competition for the NCAA Pre-National meet on Saturday, Oct. 16. Hosted by the Indiana State Sycamores at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, the meet featured 86 men's teams and 85 women's teams. Utah's men's team earned a 24th place finish while the women placed 27th against the country's top teams.
The men's team competed in the blue, 8,000-meter race and scored 653 points. The blue race featured 12 of the top 30 teams in the country and 256 runners. Senior Delfino Arevalo led the way with an impressive 63rd place finish (24:53.2). Senior Colby Frazier finished 102nd followed by freshman Vance Twitchell at 116th and junior Matt Hansen at 179th.
New Mexico's Matt Gonzales earned medallist honors with a time of 23:47.2 and Colorado won the blue race with a total of 62 points.
Switching to the women's team, the Utes participated in the White, 6,000-meter race and scored 646 points. The race featured 36 teams and 246 runners. Junior Elise Greenwood led the team with a 44th-place finish with a time of 21:28.3. Senior Nellie Hammons finished 78th, followed by senior Charity Vernon at 158th and junior Jenny Gustavson at 180th.
Colorado's Renee Metevier won the individual title with a time of 20:03.6 and led her team gold with 94 points.
The Utes will have a week off before competing in the Mountain West Conference Championships on Sat., Oct. 30, in San Diego, Calif.
