Boise, Idaho - The University of Utah women's tennis team won their season opener against No. 75 ranked Cal State Northridge, 6-1.
In doubles action, freshman Cinthia Saucedo teamed up with senior Sheri Esrock at the No. 2 spot and downed Olga Yepremian and Brittany Bierman (9-8). Freshman Jenessa Jackson and senior Rachel Alder defeated Kasia Krasinka and Sonya Kumar (8-5) at the No. 3. Freshman Whitney Eber and Junior Allison Hansen fared well at the No. 1 spot but lost to Ana Matijasevic and Yo Yo Myinton (8-6).
Utah dominated in singles play. Esrock played at the No. 1 and defeated Matijasevic in three sets (4-6, 6-0, 6-0). Hansen put out a great performance at the No. 2 as she downed Yepremian (7-5, 6-4). Eber crushed Bierman (6-0, 7-6) at the No. 3. Watts fought hard at the No. 4 spot but eventually fell to Myinton after three sets (6-4, 4-6, 10-5). The Utes remained strong at the bottom of the lineup when Saucedo downed Krasinska (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 5 and Alder beat Kumar ( 7-5, 7-5) at the No. 6.
Head Coach Megan Dorny comments on the match. " Cal State Northridge is currentley ranked 75 and this was a really good win for the team. It was a really decisive win. We won even without Ashley Young, who plays at the top of our lineup. They played great and there were a lot of strong performances."
