This Week:
The University of Utah men and women's cross country teams will get an opportunity to check out fellow Mountain West Conference teams this weekend as they compete in the Pre-Conference Meet in San Diego, Calif. Competition for the race will take place on Sat., Oct. 4.
Quoting Head Coach Brian Appell:
"We are anxious to get on the Mountain West Conference course," states Brian Appell. "This will be another opportunity to race at sea level and to see how we are doing. The team is working through this meet to prepare for the MWC meet. This week we will face Wyoming, UNLV, SDSU and some member's of BYU's team."
Last Meet:
The University of Utah cross country teams finished the Stanford Invitational on Sat., Sept. 27. The meet featured athletes from 24 teams competing in the men's 8K race and 30 women's teams competing in the 6K race, including powerhouses Stanford, Wisconsin and Arkansas.
The Stanford Invite marked the first time in a year that the women's team ran a 6K race. The Utes performed admirably placing tenth (262 points) out of a total of 22 teams. Leading the way for the women's team was Nellie Hammons who notched an impressive 28th-place finish. She was followed by Elise Greenwood who, despite feeling ill before the race finished with a 36th-place mark. Jenny Brusch finished 45th, Kristin Taylor finished 75th and Jennie Haertel finished 78th to round off the top five.
The men's team finished 12th (336 points) out of 24 teams with Jeff Davidson leading the way. He notched a 28th-place finish followed by Nick McKay at 40th. JP Rooney finished 76th, Tim Goldhardt finished 86th and Cameron Christeson finished 106th.
"We put up a decent effort as a team. Our women's team got off to a slow start but began to move up," stated Head Coach Brian Appell. Jeff Davidson and Nick McKay had pretty good races for our men's team."
Future Meets:
Next the Utes will travel to Tempe, Ariz., for the Arizona State Invitational on Fri., Oct. 10.
