This Week: The University of Utah men and women's cross country teams will kick off their 2003 seasons in Pocatello, Idaho, this weekend. The Utes will compete in the Idaho State Invitational on Sat., Aug. 30, with the invite taking place at the ISU Cross Country Course. In addition to Utah and Idaho State, the meet will feature runners from Utah State and Weber State.
Quoting Head Coach Brian Appell:
On the Women's team
"The new school year has brought some pleasant surprises," states Appell. "The women's team seems really focused for a relatively young team. The increased level of dedication and commitment has been very noticeable and the team looks strong. We expect Jenny Brusch and Elise Greenwood to have great years."
On the Men's team
"We have a very strong team this year, though we only have four strong individuals. As you know, cross country needs five strong runners so I will wait until midseason to determine if we will run our strongest athletes or save them for next year. If I redshirt the top runners, incoming freshmen Nick McKay and JP Rooney will be vital to this years team scoring."
Utes on the Run: Sophomore Elise Greenwood, who redshirted last season, is an emerging leader on a young women's team that includes no seniors. As a freshman in 2001, Greenwood led the women's team with a 20th-place finish at the Mountain West Conference Championships.
Future Meets: Next up for the Utes is the BYU Fall Classic in Provo, Utah, on Sat., Feb. 13.
