Track Athletes Named to Coaches Association 2003 all-academic team

SALT LAKE CITY - The NCAA Division I Track Coaches Association announced its 2003 all-academic team earlier this week. Utah student-athletes Nellie Hammons, Brooke LoBue and Aubrey Startin were among those recognized. The team consists of track and field student-athletes from across the country that achieved a high standard of both academic and athletic success.
Hammons, a sophomore, set a new school record in the 800 meters and went on to break that record four more times during the course of the 2003 outdoor season. The final record, which she set at the NCAA Championships, stands at 2:06.99. Hammons notched the conference's best time during the league season for the 800 with 2:07.91. She was the Utes' lone qualifier for the NCAA Championships. In the classroom, the English major has compiled a 3.45 overall grade point average. During the 2003 spring semester, she posted a 3.775 GPA to earn a spot on the U of U honor roll and Dean's List, along with the all-conference academic team.
LoBue excelled in the classroom, boasting a 3.93 overall GPA and a 4.00 mark during last spring's semester. She was named to the Verizon Academic All-America Third Team for her academic and athletic efforts. The California native holds the school record in the pole vault for both indoor (13' 5.25") and outdoor (13' 0.25"). LoBue won the pole vault at the Mountain West Conference outdoor championships and placed second at the indoor championships.
As a juco transfer, Aubrey Startin had a great year both in the classroom and in competition. With a 3.81 overall GPA, she earned academic all-MWC honors while her 3.383 GPA during last spring's semester earned her a spot on Utah's Dean's list. Startin's top finishes included a ninth-place finish in the pentathlon at the MWC indoor championships and a second-place finish in the high jump at conference outdoor championships.
