Track and Field to Compete at Robison Invitational

THIS WEEK: The University of Utah outdoor track and field team will compete in Brigham Young's Clarence Robison Invitational in Provo, Utah, this week. Competition for the meet will kick off on Friday, April 23, with the women's pole vault and will continue through Saturday, April 24. The meet will feature athletes from Utah, Weber State, Idaho State among others.
Some Utah athletes will travel to Eugene, Ore., for the Oregon Invitational. Hosted by the University of Oregon, competition will start on Friday and end on Saturday. This meet will feature athletes from Utah, Weber State and Utah State.
QUOTING HEAD COACH LISA ARCHER: "The Clarence Robison Invitational will be a great local meet with great competition," states Archer. "We are excited to have a good local crowd watch us compete."
LAST MEET: The track and field teams finished competition for the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Saturday, April 19. Hosted by Utah State, the invitational featured athletes from Brigham Young, Utah Valley State College, Weber State and Montana State.
Leading the way for Utah were Brooke LoBue, Nellie Hammons, Katie Decker, and Vanessa Mortensen. Hammons had a spectacular meet finishing first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.34. Her time was not only a new personal record, but also a school record and a regional qualifying mark. Decker finished second in the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters and LoBue finished third in the pole vault with a height of 3.81 meters. Mortensen had another great performance in the hammer throw setting a mark of 57.36 meters, which was good enough for second place.
"Everyone did a great job," stated head coach Lisa Archer. "We are showing consistency in our marks and we're ready for next week's Robison Invitational at BYU."
UTES ON THE MOVE: Sophomore Nellie Hammons had a huge week, setting a school record and personal record in the 800 meters. She now joins six other qualifiers to compete in the NCAA Regional Championships at Stanford University in May. The South Weber, Utah, native and former Layton High School track star has emerged into one of Utah's most explosive athletes in 2003. She currently ranks fifth in the Mountain West Conference in the 800 meters.
NEXT ACTION: The Utes make a repeat trip to Provo, Utah, but this time to compete in the Utah Collegiate Challenge. The Challenge goes from May 2-3. Some athletes will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., to compete in the Regional Qualifying Meet.
