SALT LAKE CITY, Ut. -- Sheri Esrock returned to play today after a three matchlay-off as the University of Utah women's tennis team defeated the visiting Weber State Wildcats 7-0 on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The win moves the Utes to 4-4 on the season.
Esrock, competing for the first time since a February 8 meeting against Brigham Young, had suffered a second-degree ankle sprain. Today, against Briana Beauchene in the number three singles, Esrock was able to shake off the rust and win 6-3, 6-2. "I had only practiced twice the last couple of weeks. I had been favoring my leg, but today I didn't do that at all. It's good to get such a decisive win."
In other singles action, Ellen Svensson defeated Alexandra Ilie 6-2, 6-1 in the number one singles. Svensson was playing at the one for the first time this season.Cassie Kasteler defeated Maria Bublik in the two singles, 6-3, 6-4. The Utes dropped only won set on the day, as Rachel Alder dropped the first set to Elana Smith 2-6, but came back 6-1, 6-3 for the win.
In the doubles action, Kasteler and Svensson teamed up to defeat Ilie and Bublik again, this time 8-1 in the number one spot. Maria Svensson and Allison Hansen lost to Smit and Chelsee Drews 8-4, but with Hilary Doyle and Rachel Alder teaming up for a 8-4 win in the three doubles, the Utes still gained the doubles point.
The Utes will now be off until March 19, when they will travel to Fort Worth to take on Texas Christian University.
