Manhesset, N.Y. -
Utah senior tight end Ben Moa is one of eight semi-finalists for the 2003 John Mackey Award for Best Collegiate Tight End.
The athletic 6-2, 260-pound Ogden, Utah, native has played many roles in Utah's conference championship season. As a tight end, Moa has played in all 10 games, starting seven. He is fourth on the team in pass receptions with 23 and his 359 receiving yards ranks third. He is averaging 15.6 yards per catch and has 3 touchdown catches. His 79-yard reception against UNLV is the longest by a Ute this season and the eighth longest in school history.
Moa has done more than play tight end. Due to injuries to Utah's running backs, he played running back in Utah's last two games-wins over Air Force and Wyoming. He has rushed 31 times for 151 yards and 3 touchdowns and is averaging 4.9 yards per carry.
In Utah's thrilling triple overtime win over Air Force on Nov. 1, Moa not only caught 5 passes for 68 yards, he rushed 9 times and scored 3 touchdowns, including the game tying touchdown. He then a threw two-point conversion pass for the win.
The John Mackey Award is named for the former NFL Hall of Fame tight end. The selection committee is composed of national sportswriters, commentators and NFL players. The finalists for the 2003 Mackey Award will be announced on Nov. 26 and the winner will be named on Dec. 9.
