THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah swimming and diving teams head to Denver, Colo., to face the Denver Pioneers. Both the Ute men and women are unbeaten at 1-0 (1-0 MWC) and 2-0 (2-0 MWC) respectively. The meet will be on Nov. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
UTE NOTES:
The Utah women are on top of the conference after a 2-0 start, while the men are tied for the lead with 18th ranked BYU at 1-0. With her performance against both San Diego State and UNLV, Meghan Demchuk was awarded Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the week. Cody Rempfer and Harley Davis earned the conference honor for Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively as well.
Both Utah teams are making noise on the national level with several swimmers and relay teams in the College Quick 50, which is a list of the top 50 times of the season to date for college swimmers in each event. The men's swimmers in the top 50 include, Evan Castro in the 100 breast (57.11) and Cody Rempfer in the 100 fly (49.40), 200 breast (2:04.34), 200 fly (1:49.06) and 200 IM (1:53.82). Rempfer's time in the 100 fly ranks ninth in the nation. Also for the men is the 200 free relay team (1:23.79), 400 free relay (3:06.87), 800 free relay (7:03.88) and the 400 medley relay (3:25.88).
On the women's side, Tessa Greegor has a top 50 time in the 100 breast (1:03.42), and the 200 free relay (1:37.73), 800 free relay (7:40.39) and the 400 medley relay (3:52.98). The 800 free relay team of Kristen Kaiser, Loren Sweny, Rachel Curci and Meghan Demchuk put up the 11th fastest time in the nation.
SCOUTING DENVER:
Both the Denver men and women are 4-6 and coming off losses to Air Force and Wyoming. The men lost to Wyoming 162-75, while the women fell 134-106. This will mark the first time Utah has met Denver under new Pioneer coach Jim Henry.
LOOKING BACK AT SAN DIEGO STATE AND UNLV:
The Utah women beat San Diego State 133-98 and UNLV 143-94 on Nov. 7 and 8. Utah was led by Meghan Demchuk, who won three events against UNLV, the 200 fly (2:07.38), 200 IM (2:08.86) and the 400 medley relay (3:52.98). Versus the Aztecs, Demchuk was a winner in the 200 medley relay (1:47.28) and the 200 free with a time of 1:55.37.
The men beat UNLV 157-83.5 for the second consecutive victory over the Rebels. Cody Rempfer won three individual events against the Rebels. Rempfer won the 200 breast (2:04.34), 200 fly (1:49.06) and the 200 IM (1:53.82).
QUOTING HEAD COACH Michael Litzinger:
"This is an opportunity for our team to swim on the road and will be an important test for us. Denver is a team with a new coach and a new attitude so we expect a very competitive meet. It will be good to see how we do on the road."
