ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah cross country teams finished the 2003 Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships on Sat., Nov. 1. The meet was held at the University of New Mexico Golf Course.

For the men, the ninth-ranked Air Force Academy brought home its first conference title as member of the MWC. On the women's side, second-ranked BYU claimed its fifth straight conference title. Utah finished sixth overall on the men's side while the women finished behind BYU, Colorado State and Air Force for fourth place.

BYU's Kip Kangogo won the men's title for the second straight year while BYU's Mannova Michaela brought home the women's title.

Leading the Utes for the women's team run was Sophomore Elise Greenwood who had a great race finishing sixth overall with a time of 21:56. Greenwood also earned MWC All-Conference First Team honors for her performance. Junior Nellie Hammons was next with an impressive 16th-place finish and a time of 22:57. She was followed by Jennifer Brusch at 30th, Jenny Haertel at 33rd and Andrea Davidson at 39th.

"We got two great performances from Elise Greenwood and Nellie Hammons today," states Head Coach Brian Appell. "I was looking for Elise to finish within the top ten and Nellie within the top 25 and they met my expectations. Unfortunately the rest of the team could not keep up with their pace and Air Force snuck past us for third place. However, they will get a chance to redeem themselves at the Mountain Region Championships."

Jeff Davidson led the men's team with a 27th-place finish. He was followed by Matt Hansen at 35th, J.P. Rooney at 36th, Nick McKay at 37th and Tim Goldhardt at 38th.

Next the Utes will compete in the Mountain Region Championships Saturday, Nov. 15, with Weber State hosting the meet in Ogden, Utah.
