SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The University of Utah women's tennis team kicked off the 2003 season with a shut out victory over Montana State on Friday, Jan. 24 at the Eccels Tennis Center. With a 7-0 win over the Bobcats, Utah is 1-0 in regular season play.
In singles competition, Senior Cassie Kasteler defeated the Bobcats' Stacey Voelker (6-3, 6-3) at the one while junior Sheri Esrock downed Vera Vasilena (6-3, 6-0) at the two. The Utes got outstanding play out of their newcomers defeating their opponents in straight sets. Sophomore Rachel Alder downed Laurel Brown in a 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory at the four spot and freshman Maria Svensson emerged victorious over Staci Rust (6-1, 6-0) at the six.
In doubles competition, the Utes swept all three matches. Kasteler and sophomore Ellen Svensson teamed up to defeat MSU's Voelker and Risteen 8-4 at the one position. At the two, Alder and Esrock downed MSU's Clark and Vasileva 8-6. Sophomore Allison Hansen and Maria Svensson finished the doubles play with an 8-5 victory over MSU's Brown and Rust.
"We couldn't have asked for a better match to open our season," states Sheri Esrock. "With a victory and everyone wining in straight sets, it looks like we're going to have an unbelievable year."
Next the Ute's will continue their home stand by taking on Saint Mary's college at the Eccles Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 26. Competition will kick off at 11:00 a.m.
