SAN DIEGO - The No. 16 University of Utah women's volleyball team fell to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference with a 3-2 loss (21-30, 23-30, 30-23, 30-26, 15-8) at San Diego State University this afternoon. The Aztecs took a two-game lead, but Utah launched a comeback, winning the next two games to tie the match. San Diego State sealed the victory, winning the fifth game 15-8. Utah hit for .259 on the match, just short of the .260 of San Diego State. However, the Utes out-blocked the Aztecs 15-10.
San Diego State opened game one with a 3-0 lead, but the Utes answered with a 4-0 run. The Aztecs then scored three points in a row. Utah tied it at seven apiece, but San Diego State scored six straight points to take a 13-7 lead. The Aztecs then pulled away for a 30-21 win. The Utes hit for .152 on the game compared to .333 by San Diego State. Sophomore Sabine Schulz finished with six kills on a .545 hitting percentage.
Game two was close early on, with 10 ties in the first 15 points. San Diego State then pulled away, leading by as many as eight (28-20) en route to the 30-23 win. Senior captain Sylva Strzinkova led the Utes with six kills on the game.
Though it started out close, game three belonged to the Utes. Utah took its first lead at 9-8 and never looked back, leading by as many as eight points and winning by the score 30-23. The Utes out-hit the Aztecs .455 to .216. Strzinkova notched five kills on the game to lead Utah.
San Diego State took a 1-0 lead in game four, but it was the only time they would be ahead. Utah led by as many as six (23-17) and won 30-26 to force a fifth game.
In the fifth and final game, the Aztecs jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back, winning by the score 15-8.
"You can't put yourself down 0-2 on the road in conference and expect to win the match," Head Coach Beth Launiere said "We have to find a way to become more consistent individually and that will show up with the team. Overall, we played a pretty decent match."
Junior Kim Turner led four Utes with double-digit kills with 19. Strzinkova notched 17, Schulz had 15 and junior Britt Whiting finished with 10. Junior libero Jackie Morrill had a match-high 16 digs, while Strzinkova and Schulz had 11 and 10 digs, respectively, to both finish with double-doubles.
Sophomore Lyndsey Phillips led the Ute blockers, notching seven, while Turner had six. Sophomore setter Kelsie Kartchner also finished with a double-double, with 49 assists and 10 digs.
UP NEXT: The Utes host New Mexico this Friday, Oct. 4, and Air Force on Saturday, Oct. 5. Both matches start at 7:00 p.m.
