BOISE, IDAHO - The No. 8 University of Utah women's volleyball team (8-2) notched its second straight three-game sweep with a 30-27, 30-21, 30-21 win over George Washington in its final match of the Boise State Invitational this evening. The Utes finished the tournament in second place with a 2-1 record.
Junior Kim Turner led Utah with 14 kills (.409 hitting percentage), five blocks and two service aces. Junior Brit Whiting added eight kills and sophomore Lyndsey Phillips had six kills and hit for .455. Phillips also added six blocks. Junior libero Jackie Morrill led the Utes with nine digs.
Sophomore setters Kelsie Kartchner and Tracy Neumeier again split time and finished with 17 and 10 assists, respectively. Kartchner also had a match-high three service aces.
George Washington was led by Ruth Lazzari with 11 kills. The Utes hit for .289, while the Colonials hit for .058. Utah also out-blocked George Washington 12-4 and had 11 service aces on the match.
"It was nice to get back on track and win two matches today after last night's loss," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "We're playing so many matches right now. We know there are things we need to work on, but we haven't had the chance since we haven't been able to practice much."
In addition to the second-place finish, three Utes -- Turner, Phillips and senior captain Sylva Strzinkova -- were named to the all-tournament team. It was the third time in three weeks that Turner and Strzinkova have received such honors.
UP NEXT: The Utes travel to Ogden on Tuesday, Sept. 17, for a 7:00 p.m. match at Weber State. The Utes then host Arkansas on Friday, Sept. 20, and Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 21. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m. at Crimson Court.
