LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah men's tennis team lost to the University of New Mexico 4-3. The Utes competed against the Lobos for third place in the Mountain West Conference Championship Tournament on Sat., Apr. 27. Utah finished fourth in the conference after beating UNLV (4-3) in the first round, but lost to San Diego State (4-0) in the second, and New Mexico in the third. Next for Utah, Seniors David Mercier and Nik Yip will look to end their tennis careers at Utah on a high note as they head to the NCAA Championships to compete in doubles.
In singles against New Mexico, Senior David Mercier defeated The Lobos' Michael Polasek (6-4, 7-6) at the one position. At the two, Senior Corrie Scheepers downed UNM's David Kowalski (6-4, 6-1). New Mexico's John Kowalski defeated Senior Nik Yip (6-3, 1-6, 6-3) at the three position. The Lobos' Ryan Stotland defeated Daniel Carlsson (7-6, 6-3), Tyler Poulson downed New Mexico's Diego Garza (7-6, 6-4) and UNM's Brent Salazar beat Daniel Lohff (6-3, 6-2).
In doubles, Mercier/Yip downed The Lobos' Salazar/Stotland (8-6) at the one position. New Mexico's Garza/Polasek beat Carlsson/Poulson (9-8) at the two and The Lobos' J. Kowalski/D. Kowalski defeated Lohff/Scheepers (8-5) at the three.
